Parchment Paper vs Wax Paper: The Short Answer
No, wax paper and parchment paper are not the same. Parchment paper is heat-resistant and usually silicone-coated, so it is safe in the oven and air fryer (most brands are rated to roughly 420–450°F / 215–230°C). Wax paper is coated with wax that melts under heat, so it should never go in the oven.
Rule of thumb: heat → parchment. No heat → wax paper is fine.
What Is Parchment Paper? What Is Wax Paper?
Parchment paper
Paper treated so its fibers become dense and resistant to grease and moisture, then usually coated with silicone. The silicone makes it non-stick and lets it handle oven heat. It comes in white (bleached) and brown (unbleached) versions, on rolls, as flat sheets and as pre-cut pan liners.
Wax paper
Thin paper coated on both sides with paraffin or soybean wax. The wax makes it moisture-resistant and non-stick at room temperature, but it softens and melts once it gets hot. It is a kitchen-counter paper, not an oven paper.
They look alike on the roll, which is why “is wax paper the same as parchment paper?” is one of the most-searched kitchen questions. The difference only shows once heat is involved.
Parchment vs Wax vs Greaseproof vs Butcher Paper
Two more papers are often mixed up with parchment: greaseproof paper and butcher paper. Here is how all four compare.
| Parchment paper | Wax paper | Greaseproof paper | Butcher paper | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What makes it work | Dense, treated fibers + silicone coating | Wax coating | Highly refined, tightly packed fibers | Heavy, strong kraft fibers |
| Oven-safe | Yes, to its rating (≈420–450°F) | No | Check the rating — usually for wrapping, not baking | Unwaxed: smoker temperatures only |
| Air fryer | Yes, weighed down | No | Only if oven-rated | Not recommended |
| Non-stick | Yes | Yes, when cold | Partly | No |
| Grease resistance | High | Moderate | High | Low to moderate |
| Best for | Baking, roasting, air frying, en papillote | Rolling dough, setting chocolate, freezer layers | Wrapping burgers, sandwiches and pastries; tray liners | Wrapping meat; smoking brisket |
Can Wax Paper Go in the Oven?
No. In a hot oven the wax coating melts onto your food and pan, can start to smoke, and any exposed paper can scorch or catch fire. The same goes for air fryers, toaster ovens and under the broiler.
Where wax paper is the better choice
- Rolling out pie crust or cookie dough without sticking to the counter
- Setting chocolate-dipped fruit, candy or fudge
- Separating burger patties, cheese slices or cookie dough before freezing
- Wrapping sandwiches and cold food
- Catching mess when sifting flour or grating cheese
What to use instead of parchment paper when baking
If you run out of parchment, don’t reach for wax paper. Use a greased and floured pan, a silicone baking mat, or greased aluminum foil for roasting. For air fryers, see our guide on putting parchment paper in an air fryer.

Rolls, sheets, pan liners, burger wraps and tray liners in your size and print, with food-contact documents for your market.
Where Greaseproof Paper and Butcher Paper Fit
Greaseproof paper
Greaseproof paper resists grease because of how it is made. The pulp is refined until the fibers pack tightly, so oil can’t soak through, with no wax needed. That is why it is used to wrap burgers, fried food, sandwiches and bakery items, and to line takeaway trays and baskets. In the UK “greaseproof paper” and “baking paper” are often used for the same product, so look for an oven rating on the pack before baking with it.
Butcher paper
Butcher paper is a heavy kraft paper built for strength. Butchers use it to wrap meat, and pitmasters wrap brisket in unwaxed (often pink or peach) butcher paper in the smoker because it lets steam escape while holding in heat. It isn’t non-stick, and waxed or plastic-coated versions shouldn’t go near heat.

Which Paper Should You Use? A Quick Guide
Baking and roasting
Parchment paper or pre-cut parchment pan liners.
Air fryer
Perforated parchment or a pre-formed parchment liner.
Dough, candy and chocolate
Wax paper or parchment — both work without heat.
Freezer layers
Wax paper or parchment between patties, slices or dough balls.
Burgers, sandwiches and fried food
Greaseproof or deli paper, often printed with your brand.
Smoked brisket
Unwaxed butcher paper.

For Food Brands and Foodservice: Choosing Custom Food Paper
For a bakery, burger chain, café or private-label kitchenware brand, choosing between these papers is a product decision. Heat, grease, brand print and the rules in your market all affect which paper is right.
- Baking lines need silicone-coated parchment in rolls, flat sheets or pre-cut pan liners sized to your trays.
- Takeaway and quick-service need greaseproof wraps, tray liners and bags that hold up to hot, oily food and carry your logo.
- Compliance: ask for food-contact documentation and PFAS-free test reports, especially for the US states and EU markets tightening PFAS rules.

Parchment Paper vs Wax Paper: FAQ
Is wax paper the same as parchment paper?
No. Parchment paper is heat-resistant and usually silicone-coated, so it can go in the oven. Wax paper is coated with paraffin or soybean wax, which melts under heat, so it is only for cold or room-temperature tasks.
Can wax paper go in the oven?
No. The wax coating melts and can smoke in a hot oven, and the paper can scorch or catch fire where it is exposed. Use parchment paper, a silicone baking mat or a greased pan instead.
Can I use wax paper instead of parchment paper for baking cookies?
No. Cookies bake on a hot, exposed tray, which will melt the wax onto the cookies and pan. Wax paper can replace parchment only for no-heat jobs like rolling dough, setting chocolate or separating food for the freezer.
What is parchment paper made of?
Parchment paper is paper treated so its fibers become dense and resistant to grease and moisture, then usually coated with silicone to make it non-stick and heat resistant. Most baking parchment is rated for roughly 420–450°F (215–230°C).
Is greaseproof paper the same as parchment paper?
Not exactly. Greaseproof paper is made from tightly packed, highly refined fibers that resist grease, and it is mainly used for wrapping and lining food. Baking parchment usually adds a silicone coating for non-stick oven use. In the UK the names are often used interchangeably, so check the pack for an oven rating.
Is butcher paper the same as parchment paper?
No. Butcher paper is a heavy, strong kraft paper used to wrap meat and, in its unwaxed form, to wrap brisket in a smoker. It is breathable rather than non-stick. Parchment is thinner, non-stick and made for baking.
Which paper is best for the freezer?
Wax paper and parchment paper both work for separating burger patties, cookie dough or cheese slices before freezing. For long-term storage, wrap the stack in an airtight bag or container as well.
