Parchment Paper in an Air Fryer: The Short Answer
Yes, you can put parchment paper in an air fryer — as long as three things are true: food sits on top to hold it down, the paper stays within its temperature rating (most parchment is rated for roughly 420–450°F / 215–230°C), and it doesn’t block the airflow the air fryer needs to cook.
The one rule people break most often: never preheat the basket with loose parchment inside. The fan can lift empty paper into the heating element.
Why Parchment Paper Works in an Air Fryer — and When It Doesn’t
An air fryer is a small convection oven. A heating element sits above the basket and a fan pushes hot air down and around the food at high speed. That design is what makes food crisp, and it is also why the type of paper you use matters.
Parchment paper is a food-grade paper treated for strength and coated with silicone, which makes it non-stick and heat resistant. That is why it can go in an air fryer when wax paper cannot. But parchment is also light. With nothing on top, the circulating air can flip it up against the element, where it scorches or ignites.
Three ways parchment goes wrong in an air fryer
- It lifts and burns. The paper was put in empty for preheating, or it is bigger than the food holding it down.
- Food comes out soggy or pale underneath. A solid sheet covering the whole basket floor blocks the air from reaching the underside of the food.
- It browns or smokes at high settings. Many air fryers reach 400°F (205°C) and some go higher, which is close to many parchment ratings. Check your box.
How to Use Parchment Paper in an Air Fryer: 6 Rules
- Choose perforated parchment or a pre-formed liner. Holes let hot air reach the bottom of the food. If you only have a plain sheet, poke a few holes in it or cut slits.
- Trim it smaller than the basket floor. Leave a small gap around the edge so air can still flow up the sides and the paper cannot fold upward.
- Add the food first, then turn it on. Never preheat with empty parchment. If your recipe needs preheating, preheat the empty basket, then add the paper and food together.
- Stay within the temperature rating. Most parchment handles 420–450°F (215–230°C). For recipes at your air fryer’s maximum, confirm the rating on the pack first.
- Keep the paper low. Nothing should rise toward the heating element. Tall, loose edges are the part most likely to scorch.
- Use it once. Throw the paper away after cooking. Greasy, used parchment is more likely to smoke the second time around.
Parchment Paper vs Other Air Fryer Options
Parchment is not the only thing people put in an air fryer basket. Here is how the common options compare.
| Option | Safe in an air fryer? | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perforated parchment sheet | Yes | Crisp results with easy cleanup: nuggets, vegetables, dumplings | Must be weighed down by food |
| Pre-formed parchment liner | Yes | Fish, glazed or marinated meats, cheesy or saucy food, baked goods | Pick a size that matches your basket floor |
| Aluminum foil | Yes, with care | Wrapping food, higher-heat cooking | Can react with acidic foods (tomato, citrus); don’t cover the whole basket |
| Silicone liner | Yes | Reusable everyday cooking | Needs washing; can reduce crisping underneath |
| Wax paper | No | Cold food prep and wrapping only | Wax melts and can smoke under heat |
| Paper towel | No | — | Light, flammable and blows into the element |
Always follow your air fryer manufacturer’s manual — some brands advise against any liner in certain models.

Parchment Sheets vs Pre-Formed Air Fryer Liners
A pre-formed air fryer liner is parchment paper pressed into a shallow bowl with raised, pleated sides. It does the same job as a flat sheet but keeps oil, sauce and crumbs off the basket, so cleanup is quicker.
How to pick the right size
- Measure the flat floor of your basket, not the top opening. The liner should sit flat with a little space around it.
- Round liners suit round baskets; square and rectangle liners suit square baskets and dual-drawer models.
- Choose low sides for crisping and higher sides for saucy food.
Flat perforated sheets are still the better choice when you want maximum crispness, because more of the food is exposed to moving air.

Which Foods Work Best on Parchment in an Air Fryer?
Great on parchment
Fish fillets and salmon, marinated or honey-glazed chicken, cheese-topped dishes, dumplings and buns, cookies, muffins and reheated pizza — anything that sticks or drips.
Use perforated paper
Fries, wings, breaded chicken and vegetables. They need hot air underneath, so choose paper with holes or a liner with a smaller base.
Skip the paper
Very light foods that can’t hold paper down (such as kale chips), and any time you are preheating the basket empty.
Is Parchment Paper Safe to Cook With?
Food-grade parchment paper made for baking and cooking is designed for direct food contact at oven temperatures. When people ask whether parchment paper is toxic, the real questions are usually these two.
Bleached or unbleached?
Both are used for cooking. Unbleached parchment is the brown or natural color many shoppers prefer; white parchment is bleached for appearance. When both are made to food-contact standards, the choice is mostly about looks and brand positioning.
PFAS-free
Some grease-resistant papers have historically used PFAS (“forever chemicals”) as a barrier. Silicone-coated parchment doesn’t need them, and more markets are restricting PFAS in food packaging. If you buy liners in bulk, ask your supplier for PFAS-free test reports.

Air Fryer Parchment Paper: FAQ
Can you put parchment paper in an air fryer without food on it?
No. Loose parchment on its own is light enough for the air fryer fan to lift into the heating element, where it can scorch or catch fire. Add the food first, then start the air fryer, and never preheat with empty paper in the basket.
What temperature can parchment paper handle in an air fryer?
Most parchment paper is rated for roughly 420–450°F (215–230°C), and many air fryers top out around 400°F (205°C). Check the rating on your box, and take extra care at the highest settings or with models that go above 400°F.
Can parchment paper catch fire in an air fryer?
It can if it touches the heating element or exceeds its temperature rating. Trim the paper to fit the basket floor, keep it weighed down with food and stay within the rated temperature to prevent this.
Can you put wax paper in an air fryer?
No. Wax paper is coated with wax that melts and can smoke under direct heat. Use parchment paper, a pre-formed parchment liner or a silicone liner instead.
Is it better to use parchment paper or aluminum foil in an air fryer?
Parchment is non-stick and does not react with food, so it suits fish, glazed meats and baked items. Foil holds its shape and handles higher heat but can react with acidic foods like tomato or citrus. Either way, weigh it down and leave space for air to circulate.
Do you need to poke holes in parchment paper for an air fryer?
Holes are recommended for flat sheets because they let hot air reach the underside of the food, giving a crisper result. Perforated air fryer parchment is sold ready-made; solid pre-formed liners are better for saucy or dripping foods.
Are disposable air fryer liners the same as parchment paper?
Most disposable air fryer liners are food-grade, silicone-coated parchment pressed into a bowl shape with raised sides. They work the same way as a parchment sheet but catch grease and crumbs more cleanly.
